Math: Students will continue to learn about place value through the hundred thousands. We will also compare numbers through the thousand’s place.
Math Homework: Brick by Brick and Knock Knock handout. Complete front and back. Homework is due Friday.
Science: Students will be learning about ecosystems and the living and non living things that make up ecosystems.
Science Homework: Study science vocabulary words. See vocabulary handout in homework folder. Vocabulary test on Friday.
Science Vocabulary Words:
Environment– is everything around a living thing.
Ecosystem– The living and non-living things in an environment. They interact and affect each other.
Population– is a group of the same kind of living things that live in the same place at the same time.
Community– is all the populations that live in an ecosystem
Habitat– the place where a population lives in an ecosystem.

Make sure your child can apply the words.
Be able to recognize a simile, synonym, antonym, & a homophone
1. simile – a comparison between 2 things using “like” or “as”
Examples: Her nose was as red as a cherry. The aardvark looked like a miniature anteater.
2. setting: where and when a story takes place
**Be able to tell the setting of a paragraph or story
3. synonym – words that mean the SAME thing
Examples: stroll/walk draw/sketch hate/detest happy/elated
4. antonym: words that mean the OPPOSITE
Examples: day/night in/out hard-working/lazy
5. genre – a category of literature
Examples: folklore, science fiction, adventure, science fiction, biography
6. fairy tale – a children’s story about magical and imaginary beings and lands
Examples: Cinderella, Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, The Frog Prince
7. tall tale – an exaggerated and unbelievable tale, told as if it were true
Examples: Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan, John Henry
8. protagonist – the leading character in a story (often considered the hero)
Example: Luke Skywalker in Star Wars
9. antagonist – the person who goes against (or opposes) another
Example: Darth Vader in Star Wars
10. homophone – words that are pronounced the same but have different meanings or spelling
Examples: know/no knew/new some/sum tale/tail plane/plain aloud/allowed

Then just click on “Spelling Test Sept 13.” This is a great (and fun) site for students to practice their weekly spelling words. The current spelling list and vocabulary list have been uploaded. You can also click on the Spelling City link below. Have fun!
Your child will receive his/her first list of spelling words (20 words) on Tuesday. Test will take place NEXT Thursday (September 12). Spelling tests will occur every other week. If your child doesn’t pass the test, he/she will have an opportunity to retake the test (with the highest grade being a 70).

Parents are invited to Parent Orientation this Thursday, September 5th, from 5:00-6:00 pm.
